Sight: Galle Fort Tour
Discover one of the best-preserved colonial forts in Asia the Dutch Fort of Galle. Every tourist’s Instagram photos and captions tell a different part of this UNESCO World Heritage site story. Today the fortress has been transformed into a place steeped in romance history and beauty inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the tales. Stroll along the ramparts and through the narrow cobbled streets leading up to the lighthouse. A fascinating collection of marine artefacts found during underwater explorations of shipwrecks along the southern coast is on display at the National Maritime Museum housed in a 17th-century Dutch warehouse. Within the citadel are several historical sites one of which is the island’s oldest breadfruit tree.
Sight: Mask Museum of Ambalangoda
Just an hour’s journey from Galle lies the coastal town of Ambalangoda in the south. The traditional art and subculture scene in Sri Lanka is full of highly skilled people. Take a stroll around the Ambalangoda Mask Museum which has stood for decades as a symbol of authenticity.
Sight: Turtle Hatchery in Kosgoda
See the turtle hatchery in Kosgoda beach strip where eggs collected from fishermen are incubated for a while before being released into the ocean. Six of the seven species of sea turtles are threatened with extinction today. The greatest extent of it is a result of human exploitation of the environment. Fortunately, this hatchery has assumed responsibility for their protection.
